DEI Interns
The DEI Internship Program
We offer a robust internship program for undergraduate and graduate students interested in advancing DEI programs and initiatives to enhance their professional skills. Interns will work on tasks and projects aligned with their interests and often, their educational and career goals. Our interns come from diverse backgrounds and bring to their role a variety of skills, contributing to Cal Poly's efforts to foster an inclusive climate as OUDI student ambassadors. They collaborate with multiple campus stakeholders to support campus and community events and provide essential day-to-day support for the Office's operations and core services.
Get Involved as a DEI Student Intern
Ideal candidates would demonstrate a commitment to advancing diversity, equity, and inclusion efforts at Cal Poly and an interest in receiving professional development in the following specialization areas:
- Event Planning and Campus Outreach
- Hispanic-Serving Institutions (HSI) Initiatives
- Black Student Success Initiatives
- Social Media Marketing and Graphic Design
- Website Editing and Management
- BEACoN Research Program Liason (Separate Application Available Here)
Applicants must be enrolled as a Cal Poly undergraduate student during AY25-26 and willing to work at least 15 hours per week at a rate of $20 per hour.

Positions will begin the fall quarter of 2025 with interns being required to attend our Fall Orientation in early September. For students residing on campus, we will work with Campus Housing to ensure early residential access if needed.
Note: If you are seeking an academic department internship placement, you are welcome to apply to any of our DEI Student internship roles, and if granted a position you will be able to fulfill your academic internship requirements with compensation from our office. Cesar Hernandez Diaz (any pronouns)
DEI Graduate Assistant
Cesar is a second-year Graduate Student in the Higher Education Counseling & Student Affairs (HECSA) program. In the Office of University Diversity & Inclusion, Cesar supports event planning and coordination, including Diversity Partners Network and the HSI Symposium. Cesar manages intern tasks and schedules, making sure things run smoothly while fostering a culture of respect, inclusivity, and collaboration. By serving as a mentor and role model, Cesar helps create a supportive environment for both interns and guests, embracing a solutions-driven approach to achieve office goals.
Outside of OUDI, Cesar is currently serving on the board of the Cal Poly Grad Student Association.
Bryanna Gay (she/her/hers)
HSI Graduate fellow
Bryanna is a second-year Master of Public Policy (MPP) student concentrating on Higher Education Policy. As a proud Chicana, first-generation student, she advocates for equitable access to higher education through her roles as Hispanic-Serving Institution (HSI) Graduate Fellow and TRIO Graduate Assistant. These roles allow her to uplift fellow Latinx students, analyze policies and programs through a social justice lens, and ensure future generations can pursue college because knowledge is power.
Alexis Espinoza(he/him/él)
On-Call Events Lead & Campus OUTREACH
Alexis is an Industrial Technology and Packaging major with a concentration in IT. His role in OUDI is to serve as an On-call events lead, campus outreach, and college ambassador OUDI representative. He organizes and attends boothing events while passionately representing and supporting the Latinx student community, aiming to create interactive and inclusive experiences for everyone as Cal Poly works to become an HSI.
Outside of OUDI, he is an OCOB Ambassador VP of Outreach, OCOB Dean’s Advisory Council Representative, DEI and Alumni Relations chair for the Latinx Business Student Association, and Facilities Planning and Capital Projects infrastructure team intern.
Issac Enrique Cervantes (he/él)
Communications Intern
Issac is a second-year Graphic Communication student with a concentration in User Experience/User Interface. He is also completing a minor in Spanish and a minor in Computer Science and is on track to graduate a year early. As an OUDI communications intern, Issac assists with creating graphic designs for a variety of marketing and communication projects while also managing the Office’s website content.
Outside of OUDI, Issac is part of the Cal Poly Admissions Mustang Mentorship Program, mentoring a high school senior through the higher-education journey.
Jonathan Speirs (he/him/his)
Communications Intern
Jonathan is a fourth year Graphic Communication major with a concentration in Design Reproduction Technology. In OUDI he serves as a communications intern, helping to create eye-catching compositions and assist with social media communications.
Outside of OUDI, Jonathan is the Cultural Ambassador for Cal Poly’s Multiracial Students’ Association (MUSA) and is the graphic designer and social media lead for Formation SLO church.
Ketzali Maciel-Jimenez (she/her/ella)
HSI & DEI STUDENT INTERN
Ketzali is a first-year transfer student majoring in Business Administration with a concentration in Management and Human Resources. As a diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) intern with the Office of University Diversity and Inclusion (OUDI), she is dedicated to helping OUDI through outreach, event coordination, and her work with the Hispanic-Serving Institution (HSI) initiatives. Not only is she committed to creating inclusive spaces where all students feel seen and valued, but also to foster a diverse campus community through her work with OUDI and beyond.
Outside of OUDI, she is part of the Latinx Business Student Association and the Latinx Cultural Association.
Nailah DuBose (she/her/hers)
Black Student Success Initiatives Intern
Nailah is a fourth-year student majoring in Psychology with minors in Communication Studies and Sports & Exercise Studies. In the Office of University Diversity and Inclusion (OUDI), she serves as the liaison for the Black Student Success Initiatives and the Multicultural Programming Grant and assists with partnerships with Texture, Race Matters SLO, and Fortune Schools of Education.
Outside of her work with OUDI, Nailah is the Vice President of the Xi Xi Chapter of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc., a member of the Black Student Union, the Chair of the College of Liberal Arts Student Diversity Committee, and the DEI Lead for the Cal Poly Psi Chi Honors Society.
Zoila Kanu(she/her/hers)
BEACoN liaison & student lead
Zoila is a fourth year Computer Science major. In OUDI she serves as a student lead liaison for the BEACoN Research Scholars program providing a space for students to explore research opportunities within and outside their major while also facilitating mentor and mentee bonding between students and faculty.
Outside of OUDI Zoila serves as a Residential Advisor for first year students, she is also a robotics instructor at Pacheco Elementary school and is member of Women in Software and Hardware (WISH) club on campus.
