OUDI Interns 22'-23'
The Office of University Diversity and Inclusion offers a robust internship program for undergraduate and graduate students who are interested in DEI programs and initiatives OUDI relies on our interns to provide essential day to day support in our office, as well as support to our many campus and community events. Interns work on a variety of projects that align with the interests and often, their area of study. Our interns come from diverse backgrounds and skill sets, and contribute to Cal Poly's diverse and dynamic culture both inside and outside of their internship with OUDI.
OUDI Graduate Student Intern 2022-2023
Selina Jaimes Davila
DEI Grad Student Intern
Selina is currently pursuing a Masters of Science in Higher Education Counseling/Student Affairs (HECSA). As the OUDI Graduate Intern, Selina collaborates with DEI colleagues from various departments to work together on development and implementation of diversity and inclusion initiatives on campus like the HSI taskforce, HSI student engagement, and Huerta Lewis social justice living community. She also assists with scheduling team meetings, providing mentoring, and advising for OUDI interns, and other office tasks.
She is committed to creating a more welcoming environment at Cal Poly by being a member of the HSI Taskforce and Dream Center. Outside of OUDI, Selina conducts research with ENGAGE – Engineering Neighbors: Gaining Access, Growing Engineers at Cal Poly.

Esperanza Guinevere Castillo
OUDI DEI events Student intern
Esperanza is a 5th year Recreation, Parks, and Tourism Administration with a concentration in Tourism, Hospitality, and Destination Management, and a Minor in Chinese Studies. In their internship with OUDI they plan events centered on DEI initiatives such as the President's Diversity Awards, and BEACoN Symposium. They also support events in the office such as the Diversity Partners Network, and events done by the cultural centers on campus.
They are an active member of the American Indian Students Association and love supporting and attending events held by the Student Diversity and Belonging centers. They previously held roles for Cal Poly's Orientation Cross Cultural Experience program, and were a part of the first team for Cal Poly's Latinx Center, La CASA.
Wesley Ahumada Newhart
DEI Student Intern
Wesley is a 4th year Political Science Student with a Global Politics concentration and double minoring in Spanish and City and Regional Planning. In OUDI he provides support to events and works on a variety of tasks in the OUDI office. He is a student representative on the Hispanic Serving institution taskforce, and works on website updates and devolvement for the OUDI office.
He is a member of the Transfer Student Advisory Council, and board member of the Phi Sigma Iota foreign language honors society, and the Cal Poly Political Science Club.
Sophia Escalona
DEI Student Intern
Sophia is a 4th year City and Regional Planning. She runs the offices social media presence, and If you’ve messaged our Instagram she is likely the one who will respond. She provides support to office and campus activities and events. Vitally she serves as a liaison between OUDI and the many cultural clubs on campus.
Outside of OUDI, she enjoys making art, being in nature, and dancing with Kasayahan, the Pilipino Cultural Exchange’s traditional dance team on campus. She is also a board memebr of oSTEM a club providing community for LGBTQIA+ people in STEM.
Emily Petatan Gonzalez
DEI Student Intern
Emily is a 3rd year Sociology major with a concentration in Organization and minor in Ethnic Studies. In her role as a DEI student intern with the Office of Diversity and Inclusion she serve as member of the Hispanic Serving Institution (HSI) Task Force as a student representative. She provides administrative support to OUDI admin and logistical support during heritage month events to foster student engagement toward an equitable campus climate.
Outside of OUDI she participates in the College of Liberal Arts Student Advisory Council, College of Liberal Arts Student Diversity Committee, Transfer Student Advisory Council, and Association for Transfer Students (ATS).
Cristian Reyes
DEI Student Intern
Cristian is a 3rd year Child Development major with minors in Ethnic Studies, Equity in Education, and Queer Studies. He helps support OUDI efforts to foster an equitable campus community. He also provides essential event and office support.
He is a student assistant to the College of Liberal Arts Associate Dean of Diversity and Curriculum, Dr. Teramoto-Pedrotti. On campus, he is involved with the College of Liberal Arts Student Advisory Council, College of Liberal Arts Student Diversity Committee, as well as an active brother of Lambda Theta Phi Latin Fraternity, Inc.
Nanoha Kamiya
BEACON & DEI Student Intern
Nanoha is a 4th year Psychology major with a Child Development minor. As an intern with the BEACoN Program, she helps plan, organize, and advertise various events for the BEACoN community. These events are often diversity and inclusion, professional development, or research related events and opportunities. Additionally, she collaborates with her internship partner to design weekly newsletters and Canvas pages to spread word about opportunities for underrepresented students on campus.
In addition to her work with the BEACoN Program, she serve as a student teacher at the Cal Poly Preschool Learning Lab and as a peer advisor for the College of Liberal Arts.
Emily Valenzuela
BEACON & DEI Student Intern
Emily is a 4th year Child Development student. She is an intern for BEACoN and works to engage with the community and spread awareness for campus events. Her duties also include organizing the BEACoN Canvas page with information about events and opportunities that are being offered by different clubs and organizations on campus. She also make promotional materials for events and plan social gatherings for the BEACoN team.
Marquell Jackson
business student intern/Community initiatives
Marquell is a 3rd year Business Administration student with a concentration in Information Systems. He is currently a student intern at OUDI collaborating with R.A.C.E MATTERS and is working at the Texture building in downtown San Luis Obispo. There he will be help with strategizing ways to monetize and sustain the business.
Outside of OUDI, Marquell is a DEI Ambassador for the Admissions and Recruitment office as well as a Program Manager at the digital transformation hub powered by AWS.
