Phase 7 - Final Stages in the Recruitment Process

Remember that the search committee is making a recommendation to the Dean. Thorough descriptions of candidates’ strengths and areas of growth and explanations of these in context may ensure that the Dean fully understands the information you've gleaned from the process and your department’s attention to particularly valued skills, expertise, and experiences.

Final Steps Timeline

  • Search Committee Summary and Recommendation (nomination package) completed
  • Nomination Package sent to the Dean for final hiring decision
  • Dean communicates hiring decision to search committee
  • Dean (or designee) completes final reference checks before extending offer to selected finalist(s)
  • Dean (or designee) makes offer to candidate
  • Negotiation process – be aware of connections or programs for new hires and for general faculty support that already exist around campus in order to answer potential questions and/or offer additional resources (see below for examples)
  • Offer accepted by candidate
  • Background check is initiated by HR
  • Notify unsuccessful candidates (Search chair notifies the unsuccessful finalists and for all others, there is automatic notification through PageUp)
