Statement from CIX on Latinx/e Heritage Month 2025
Dear Campus Community,
From Sept. 15 to Oct. 15, we honor Latinx Heritage Month, a time to recognize the rich histories, diverse cultures and far-reaching contributions of Latinx communities on our campus and across the nation.
As scholar and writer Gloria Anzaldúa once wrote, “Though we tremble before uncertain futures, may we meet adversity with strength; may we dance in the face of our fears.” Her words resonate deeply in this moment, reminding us that Latinx heritage is shaped by both struggle and strength, not as a singular story but as a powerful, plural experience woven into the fabric of our history.
At Cal Poly, our work toward becoming a Hispanic-Serving Institution (HSI) is not merely about receiving the title; it is about our collective commitment to servingness — to creating an environment where Latinx students and all students thrive. With Latinx/e enrollment now reaching 25%, we recognize both the promise and the responsibility that comes with this milestone. We affirm that honoring Latinx Heritage Month means more than celebration; it means centering Latinx histories, voices and experiences in our academic, cultural, and student success practices.
The Latinx/e community is a vibrant collective of diverse cultures and people who hold multitudes across gender identity, sexual orientation, immigration status, ability, and many other lived experiences.
At Cal Poly celebrating Latinx Heritage Month goes beyond statements. It is rooted in expanding holistic supports, nurturing belonging and advancing equity so that every member of our community is empowered to succeed. As we mark this month, let us recommit to embedding these values in all we do, both individually and institutionally, so that Cal Poly reflects the richness of Latinx heritage in mission, vision and everyday practice.
Throughout the month, departments across campus will host events, celebrations and conversations that affirm Latinx identities and experiences. Highlights include:
