The Office of University Diversity & Inclusion is proud to co-sponsor with the Office for Writing and Learning and the Black Academic Excellence Center, a talk by Dr. April Baker-Bell. The talk, "Linguistic Justice: Black Language, Literacy, Identity and Pedagogy," will take place on February 28th, from 4:00-5:30 PM in the Chumash Auditorium.

Dr Baker-Bell is a renowned scholar a and activist whose research interrogates the intersections of Black language and literacies, anti-Black racism, and antiracist pedagogies, and is concerned with antiracist writing, critical media literacies, Black feminist-womanist storytelling, and self-preservation for Black women in academia, with an emphasis on early career Black women. Dr. Baker-Bell is an international leader in conversations on Black Language education, and her award-winning book, Linguistic Justice: Black Language, Literacy, Identity, and Pedagogy, brings together theory, research, and practice to dismantle Anti-Black Linguistic Racism and white linguistic supremacy.

Dr. Baker-Bell will introduce a new way forward through Antiracist Black Language Pedagogy in the talk. This pedagogical approach intentionally and unapologetically places Black Language at the center to interrogate white linguistic hegemony and anti-Black linguistic racism critically.
