Small Island Big Song

Small Island Big Song

Small Island Big Song unites seafaring cultures of the Pacific and Indian Oceans through a contemporary musical statement addressing the climate crisis. Join us for two workshops and a their concert.

Workshop #1: Trash to Music

Thursday April 25 - 11am - 12:30 pm yakʔitʸutʸu Amphitheater

Trash to Music is an inspiring hands-on activity demonstrating how to make musical instruments from trash, commonly recycled, and/or reused materials. One person’s trash is another’s treasure! In this workshop we’ll be making a Malagasy-style berimbau and shaker.

Participants will be divided into groups of 3-4 people with a leader. SIBS artists will demonstrate the berimbau, then make a shaker. Afterwards each table will be able to make additional instruments of their choice.

If you are able, please bring any of the following: 2L plastic water bottle, small or medium tin cans, small dried beans, tin snips. We will have materials available.

Workshop #2: Dancing Mauritian Sega

Thursday April 25 2:00pm - 3:30pm Moon-Ja Minn Suhr Dance Studio

Get ready to sweat and have some fun while learning Sega Dance from Mauritius with drumming accompaniment by Small Island Big Song artists. Open to all levels and abilities! Please wear loose and comfortable clothing.

Dance is a form of storytelling that preserves cultural memory and history. Sega is both the national dance of Mauritius and a profound artistic embodiment of the historical and cultural memory of colonial slavery. It is a testament to the strength of the human spirit and the capacity to create and express beauty and joy out of nothing. Led by Mathieu Joseph, one of Mauritius’ best choreographers of the young generation.
