Black Lives Matter

On Thursday, September 3, Dr. Denise Isom, Interim Vice President for University Diversity and Inclusion sent the following message to Cal Poly's faculty and staff:


Dear Faculty and Staff,

George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, Ahmaud Arbery…and before them, Tamir Rice, Michael Brown, Philando Castille, Atatiana Jefferson…and now, Jacob Blake and the contrast with Kyle Rittenhouse, the list keeps getting longer, and the pain and anguish deeper.

In the midst of the pandemic and planning for the opening of our complicated school year, so many of us are also grappling with issues of race and our current social context. This moment has propelled some to use their voices in protests and sit ins, marches and demonstrations, and some have sought opportunities to reflect and dialogue with others.

Late last week, in response to incidences of racial violence and police brutality, Dr. Anthea Butler (University of Pennsylvania) and Dr. Kevin Gannon (Grand View University) started #ScholarStrike, asking faculty and staff from around the nation to “strike” on Sept. 8th and 9th, or if that isn’t possible, to only do what is necessary for their jobs and spend the rest of their time at #ScholarStrike’s Teach In presented on their YouTube channel. They, like I, “believe that it’s of crucial importance for those of us in higher education to take a stand in solidarity with our students and the communities we serve”

At Cal Poly, we know that September 8th & 9th are full of preparations for the fall quarter, the welcoming of our new students to campus, and establishing our campus culture and commitment to student success. To echo the email Lewis Call, CFA Chapter President, shared with department heads and chairs, all faculty have flexibility to reschedule their departmental and faculty meetings on September 8th and 9th. Department chairs and some program directors may be required to participate during “Academic Day” events that have been scheduled to welcome our new students to Cal Poly, and faculty are typically encouraged to attend these activities as well.  These events might provide opportunities to devote all or part of the meeting to a discussion of racial justice. College deans may provide more specific guidance for faculty based on the scheduled “Academic Day” events in each college.

I invite everyone to devote themselves to reflecting, discussing, and pursuing our values of equity and social justice, and to our purpose as a University, to seek knowledge and critically engage with the world around us. I encourage you, to take what time you have on those two days (and everyday) to reflect on this moment, invest in learning and community discourse. We are all part of the collective community that can be the leaders and engines for change that our students, faculty, staff, and community are seeking.  

To that end, The Office of University Diversity & Inclusion(OUDI) will host a Zoom discussion on Anti-Black racism and racial violence with myself, Dr. Amber Williams, and Associate Dean Camille O’Bryant from 12:10-1:00 p.m. on Sept. 8th (log in using your Cal Poly credentials). Act

It is always the right time to do the right thing. Taking action can manifest in many ways, from learning more about the history of Black people and African Americans, to how institutional racism persists and is perpetuated, to contacting your elected officials, talking to your friends and family about racism, or participating in a march in support of the Movement for Black Lives.

Allyship

An active, consistent, and arduous practice of unlearning and re-evaluating, in which a person in a position of privilege and power seeks to operate in solidarity with a marginalized group (Source:The Anti-Oppression Network)

Allyship is a process, not a destination or an identity that can be claimed. Allyship requires building, sustaining, and nurturing relationships of trust with marginalized individuals or groups that is based in consistency (i.e., standing in solidarity and using your privileges to undermine oppression all the time, not just when it’s convenient or popular), and accountability (i.e., listening to and internalizing critiques of shortcomings and taking responsibility for your own learning and knowledge gaps)

Get Involved

Contact your elected officials and let them know what you think. You can find the contact for your elected officials here.

• Donate funds to organizations that work to advance racial equity and justice, including Cal Poly’s Black Student UnionNational Society of Black Engineers, and the Black Academic Excellence Center.

Learn how to show allyship when you don’t know what to do.

• If you are White, use this guide to direct a conversation with other White people about race, racism and systemic racism, and social inequities.

• Learn more about implicit bias and what you can do to address your own biases by watching this video by Drs. Patricia Devine and William Cox. You can guide your learning or facilitate a discussion with other viewers using this discussion guide.
